With the aim to connect, strengthen, and expand the network of researchers in the fields of Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science in Vietnam. In two days, December 1-2, 2022, at Dalat University, the International Conference on Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science was organized with the participation of 120 scientists, researchers, lecturers, doctoral and master’s students from 22 universities, research institutes, businesses inside and outside the country.
The conference was co-organized by Dalat University (DLU), the International Centre of Research and Postgraduate Training in Mathematics under the auspice of UNESCO (ICRTM), the Institute of Mathematics Hanoi (IMH), the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), the Unit for Mathematical and Computer Modeling of Complex Systems (Unité de Modélisation Mathématique et Informatique des Systèmes Complexes – UMMISCO), the Research Institute for Development (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement – IRD), Thuy Loi University (TLU), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), and VinGroup Innovation Fund (VinIF). This was a forum for scientists, doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s students to exchange ideas and methods, introduce and discuss results, research directions on combinatorics, graph theory, computer science and related issues both in terms of theory and practical applications. The forum aimed at the formation of new research groups as well as the connection between research groups on these topics in Vietnam. Attending the conference, on the side of the invited delegates, there were Prof. Dr. Patrick Taillandier, Prof.Dr. Tri-Nguyen Huu, Prof. Dr. Phung Ho Hai, Prof. Dr. Le Hoai Bac, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Doanh. Representing the sponsors, there was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Ha Duong – Managing Director of Vingroup Innovation Fund – VinIF. On the side of Dalat University, there were Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh – Chairman of Dalat University Board of Trustees, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tat Thang – Vice President, and leaders of functional departments and faculties of the University.
During two days, the participants were presented with 5 plenary papers and 23 individual papers divided into 7 sessions with diverse contents, topics, and research directions and applications in the fields of Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science such as graph and network theory, community search algorithms and complex systems mining, modeling and simulation problems, diverse applications in systems data mining, medical science, epidemiology as well as ecosystems and biology.
In particular, the conference devoted one session to Interactive Modeling so that the participants could directly participate and interact with the models. The models aimed to raise people’s awareness about the problem of domestic waste pollution and its impact on the irrigation system. The model also created space for innovative ideas to improve and foster social dialogue among other stakeholders on pollution.
In the digital age, Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science play important roles, are important and essential tools in most of the applied sciences and solve a lot of practical problems in everyday life. The Abel Prize 2021 was presented to Avi Wigderson (mathematician and computer scientist) and László Lovász (mathematician) for their contributions to discrete mathematics and computer science, showing the importance, proximity, and intersection of the central field of modern mathematics both in theory and in applied aspects.
