On the morning of November 6, 2020, at conference room 203 of building A11, Dalat University Central Library held a closing and awarding ceremony to candidates with high achievements in the Reading Culture Ambassador Contest 2020.
The Reading Culture Ambassador Contest is one of the activities to implement the plan of the project “Developing reading culture in the community in 2020, with a vision to 2030” organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2020. This is an activity to arouse students’ interest and passion for reading. Thereby encouraging and promoting the reading movement among the young generation, forming reading habits and skills for students, and contributing to the development of reading culture in schools and communities. The contest affirmed the great role of reading culture in improving the internal resources of Vietnamese people, especially students, in accessing information and knowledge, contributing to raising people’s intellectual level, developing thinking and creative ability, fostering personality and soul, forming a healthy lifestyle for the young generation, and promoting the building of a learning society.
The contest was launched in February 2020, however, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic and social distancing, it was not until October that the national committee conducted a review of the contest. The 2020 Reading Culture Ambassador contest was held in 02 rounds: the preliminary round and the final round.
At the preliminary round, the organisers received 28 valid entries from students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, International Studies, Education, Law Studies, Agriculture and Forestry, Tourism, Economics and Business Administration, Biology, and Nuclear Physics and Engineering.
In the final round, the contest attracted the participation of students in nearly 5,400 primary schools, middle schools, high schools, and universities/ institutes; 1,252 entries sent to the final round of the contest are the most outstanding products of the contestants, which have shown the students’ intelligence, efforts, creativity, dedication, and love for books. Dalat University sent 10 entries to the final round and got 02 consolation prizes (out of 65 awards for students with excellent achievements).
Although the contest also has its limitations such as the number of contestants participating in the contest was not large compared to the total number of students, and the contest did not have a great impact. However, the biggest success of the contest was to change the perception of reading and improve reading skills. Through their articles, students introduced a variety of books that are age-appropriate, educational, and humanistic. They also expressed their feelings, opinions about books, and knowledge gained from reading books. This is also an opportunity for the Library to access the types of books students are interested in, expand activities to improve reading culture, and serve the teaching, learning, and comprehensive education for students. In general, the organising committee commented: The organisation of this contest every year is a meaningful activity to promote the efficiency of library activities, propagating the act of reading and learning from books, and maintaining and developing a reading culture.
